Defective Subviral Particles Modify Ecological Equilibria and Enhance Viral Coexistence

چکیده
Cooperation is a main driver of biological complexity at all levels. In the viral world, gene sharing among genomes, complementation between genomes or interactions within quasispecies are frequently observed. this contribution, we explore effects flexible associations fully fledged viruses and subviral entities, such as virus satellites, in dynamics and, particular, stable coexistence. We devise mathematical model to compare different situations competition two quantify how association with satellite qualitatively modifies dynamical equilibria. The relevant parameter invasion fitness each virus-satellite tandem, which depends on transmission rate their effect host survival. virus-virus competition, one becomes eventually extinct, recasting competitive exclusion law ecology. However, an might change outcome ways, either favor less (regardless whether it helper not) allow for coexistence satellite. differs from other mechanisms proposed ecology date enhance species hypothesize that constitutes parsimonious evolutionary pathway towards more cooperative associations, bipartite forms, collaborative unique viruses.

RNA binding properties of poliovirus subviral particles.
The mechanism of encapsidation of the RNA genome of poliovirus and other picornaviruses is unknown. To test whether any of the putative assembly intermediates of poliovirus could interact directly with the poliovirus RNA genome, poliovirus RNA was attached to magnetic streptavidin beads and incubated with partially purified extracts containing 35S-labeled 14S pentamer and 75S empty-capsid subvi...
متن کاملTranscription by infectious subviral particles of reovirus.
Digestion of purified reovirus with chymotrypsin in the presence of 0.15 M NaCl converts virions to infectious subviral particles (SVP(i)). The SVP(i) have an active ribonucleic acid (RNA) polymerase and are similar in composition to the partially uncoated virions which have been isolated from infected L cells. SVP(i) have a buoyant density of 1.40 g/ml in CsCl and sediment at 420S as compared ...
متن کاملDefective Interfering Viral Particles in Acute Dengue Infections
While much of the genetic variation in RNA viruses arises because of the error-prone nature of their RNA-dependent RNA polymerases, much larger changes may occur as a result of recombination. An extreme example of genetic change is found in defective interfering (DI) viral particles, where large sections of the genome of a parental virus have been deleted and the residual sub-genome fragment is...
متن کاملMorphogenesis of hepatitis B virus and its subviral envelope particles.
After cell hijacking and intracellular amplification, non-lytic enveloped viruses are usually released from the infected cell by budding across internal membranes or through the plasma membrane. The enveloped human hepatitis B virus (HBV) is an example of virus using an intracellular compartment to form new virions. Four decades after its discovery, HBV is still the primary cause of death by ca...
متن کاملImmunogenic, non-infectious polio subviral particles synthesized in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
Polioviral genes coding for P1, the precursor for the structural proteins, and 3CD, the viral protease, were cloned in a Saccharomyces cerevisiae inducible expression system. N-antigenic empty capsids could be isolated from the yeast cell extract provided that pirodavir, a capsid-binding compound and capsid stabilizer, was added during the induction period and during purification. Purification ...
